It is an honour for us to support The Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF) this year, as they work hard to conserve the marine life in the Bahamian reefs.
CORAL REEF DECLINE
It is reported that across the world, there has been an 80% decline in live coral over the past 50 years. BREEF is dedicated to protecting the reefs in the Caribbean. Their work involves establishing specific areas for growing, nurturing and transplanting the endangered corals. BREEF also champions sustainable fisheries as well as educating and inspiring the next generation of natural world guardians.
BREEF also places a focus on the Sharks that inhabit the Bahamian waters, specifically the Great Hammerhead Shark, these creatures are integral to the marine ecosystem and play and important part in the health of the ocean.
It is estimated that 100 million sharks are killed each year at the hands of man. A wide variety of shark species are threatened with extinction across the globe and BREEF is working hard each day to support the growth of their numbers. Sharks are not only important for the health of the complex ecosystems, but also help the tourism industry in the Bahamas bring in local income, divers from around the planet come to the Caribbean to experience and observe these magnificent creatures.
BREEF is running an education programme which specifically supports shark conservation, teaching younger generations to appreciate the often-misunderstood Shark.
We are extremely proud to work with BREEF on this crucial cause, through their education programmes, policy building, public support growth and their hands-on work beneath the surface. Protecting this beautiful part of the natural world is so important and we are proud to be a part of the solution.
Many of our Spring/Summer 19 collection prints are inspired by our charity projects, including our Hot Hammerhead and Crazy Coral designs. Both of these unique prints are inspired by this project with BREEF.
