We meet the makers behind the incredible brands, artists and artisans as part of our Brands In Residence edit at LOVE BRAND & Co. curated by Rose Tomalin. Meet Matthew Hodge founder of Golden Hour Vision, the sunglass brand that is helping to transform people’s lives by restoring their vision.
As a keen sailor, yachtsman and self-proclaimed “water baby” it is no surprise that a good pair of sunglasses for Matthew is a necessity. It was when Matthew realised that there was a gap in the market for sunglasses offering both high quality style and performance, that Golden Hour was born. Each pair of Golden Hour sunglasses is polarised with full UV protection which as Matthew describes, keeps your eyes “fresh, young and healthy, ready for every adventure!”.
It is estimated that around the world a shocking 285 million people are visually impaired. Upon recognising the lack of commitment to eye health and sight in the developing world, Golden Hour decided to work alongside the charity Mercy Ship to reach isolated communities. The brand donates 10% of their revenue to supporting the doctors onboard Mercy Ship’s hospital ship which is currently docked in Cameroon, West Africa. Not only do Golden Hour’s sunglasses offer the highest standard of eye protection but each purchase helps those in need.
When discussing the name of the brand, he explains that he was inspired by the warm tones of the sunset that he so regularly experienced whilst out at sea. Now an Instagram phenomenon, ‘Golden Hour’ is the hour before the sun sets when the entire sky seems to glow, known to us as true paradise!
Each style of sunglasses has its own narrative as Matthew designed them all whilst at anchor. Each time he came across a new location that inspired him, a new design was born. A particular favourite of ours from the Club Brands edit are the Santorini Pair in sandstone, all that’s left to do is get to Greece!
